Montevideo Community Supports School

Right Plan. Right Now! Bond Referendum Approved

Montevideo, MN (February 10, 2025) - Montevideo Public Schools will see big changes in the coming years, most notably investments in safety and security, plumbing repairs, a new and fully-equipped performing arts center, and updated learning spaces for Science, FACS, media center, and cafeteria, thanks to approval of a bond referendum on February 10.

Unofficial Results (results are unofficial until canvassed by the school board):

1,212  Yes Votes

919  No Votes

“The referendum question passed in the February 10 election will make a big difference in the learning environment for our students and large group and performance spaces for the entire school community,” said Montevideo Public Schools Superintendent Jamie Skjeveland. “We thank all voters who made their voices heard, and we thank all of you for supporting our students, families, and our hard-working staff, and for believing in the continued success of our community.”

The bond referendum question approved will positively affect Montevideo Public Schools by:

  • Building a performing arts center for the school and community.

  • Ensuring all our schools meet today’s safety and security standards.

  • Fixing the high school’s deteriorating plumbing and eradicating the urine smell.

  • Upgrading our schools to work for today’s teaching and learning strategies.

  • Making sure every student and resident benefits from the bond referendum.

Montevideo School Board Chair, Andrew Stenson believes now that the election is over, a new chapter in the future of the entire Montevideo community can begin. “While we recognize not everyone voted yes on this question, we believe there is common ground in supporting the needs of our children, and we will build on that common ground to ensure that we all move forward together as a united community.”

The next step is to begin schematic design and development of the proposed building improvements. Projects will likely be under construction by June 2027. Students, staff, parents and families and the entire school community will be informed at every step of the process with regular updates from the school district.
