Montevideo Public Schools
Winter 2026 - Bond Referendum for Buildings
Please vote on or before February 10.
Dear Montevideo Public Schools community:
Montevideo Public Schools is the heartbeat of our community, where students pursue their education from cradle to career. On February 10, voters will decide on a bond referendum that addresses facility needs across our district. This is the 4th referendum in the last 5 years seeking funding for facility improvements. After careful consideration of community feedback to previous proposals, we believe that this is the ”Right Plan. Right Now!”
Please review the information on this website, in mail to your home, in meetings, and on social media so that you can make an informed decision about this referendum proposal. Please vote on or before February 10. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Montevideo Public School Board
How Did We Get Here?
After extensive study and community input, the Board of Education of Montevideo Public Schools has unanimously approved a bond referendum for buildings in a February 10, 2026 Special Election. The School Board and District Leaders, working with educational facility experts, assessed the school district’s facilities to determine the following urgent needs:
There is no performing arts center and performance support space on the high school campus, requiring students to practice and perform in the school gymnasium or off campus in less than ideal conditions.
Science classrooms, labs, and prep room fixtures, sinks, basins, and some safety equipment are not working or in poor condition, and are not ADA compliant. For example, there is currently no gas available for science experiments.
Plumbing in our 60-year old high school is failing - with a constant urine stench and urine pooling in some urinals - some underground drainage pipes are 70% blocked with calcium buildup.
The high school gymnasium lobby currently does not provide community members who attend events with ADA compliant seating areas.
There is no ADA access in the gymnasium, weight room, and bathrooms in the high school.
Visitors can currently access all schools without checking in at the main office.
The high school cafeteria is too small with inadequate serving lines, and multiple lunch periods, creating cost inefficiencies. Equipment is outdated.
Learning spaces in the high school are undersized and outdated, including band and choir, family and consumer science classroom/lab.
The high school library/media center lacks spaces and furniture to support today’s demands for student access to remote learning opportunities and doesn’t provide flexible seating/furniture for collaboration.
The storm shelter in the high school does not meet current MDE requirements.
Research shows that student learning is directly impacted by failing school infrastructure. We are confident that with these improvements, students of the Montevideo School District will have educational opportunities equal to their peers in neighboring districts and program spaces that inspire students for a successful future.
Additionally, the proposed bond referendum for buildings is a cost-effective investment that will serve the community well into the future.
